Following The Ninth: In The Footsteps of Beethoven’s Final Symphony, is a documentary film taking us on a cinematic journey across five continents and into the heart and soul of one of the world’s greatest works of art.

Completely deaf and adrift from the people he loved, Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Ninth Symphony as an act of transcendence near the end of his life, in 1824. Looking into his own abyss, Beethoven wrote his Ode to Joy for himself, for the people of his day, and for all generations to come.

Today, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony resonates still as the international anthem of hope. The Ninth buoyed the protesters in Tiananmen Square, provided solace to those struggling for freedom in Pinochet’s Chile, and continues to fill seats in symphony halls and karaoke bars from London to Tokyo and Cape Town. Following The Ninth captures the power and beauty of Beethoven’s grand and world-transforming achievement, touching the lives of people around the world for nearly 200 years.

Pocahontas Island, named after the legendary American Indian princess, is said to be the first African-American settlement in the nation. Petersburg's first slaves started to work in that neighborhood at John Bolling's tobacco warehouses in 1732. Eighteen years later, the land was subdivided and called Wittontown. It was renamed Pocahontas in 1752 and became part of Petersburg, Virginia 32 years later.

For decades, Pocahontas Island was the perfect hiding place for fugitive slaves, surrounded by the Appomattox River and because of its connecting wetland and the neighborhood's dense population. Because of its significant resources, ranging from prehistoric to historic, Pocahontas Island is listed on both the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.

During World War II in Nazi occupied France, a unique transportation unit was formed to keep General Patton's lightening fast troops supplied. The Red Ball Express was overwhelmingly made up of over 8,000 Black troops: back home their loyalties and intelligence were questioned, but on the shores of France, in a war that had to be won, these courageous black men were willing to fight and die for their country.

“The Lessons of Hayti” examines the unique history of Black self-sufficiency and political power in the United States from it’s origins just following President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 up to the second inauguration of America’s first Black President, Barack Obama, 150 years later, and how that power has eroded since the Civil Rights era, leaving Black America in a current state of economic turmoil.
As told by prominent historians, scholars, former Hayti residents, and a survivor of the Tulsa Riots of 1921, “The Lessons of Hayti” details a history of Black success in America, including the creation of over 100 independent Black communities, nearly 100 Black Colleges and Universities, and wielding massive political power in the former Confederate States, all within 50 years of the end of slavery.
“The Lessons of Hayti” also examines the demise of these historic Black communities over the last 100 years due to both racial violence and political backstabbing triggered by pivotal historic events including the landmark case “Plessy vs. Ferguson” in 1898, the end of of World War 1 in 1918, and the civil rights movement of the 1950’s and 60’s.

Coming to England’ is an adaptation of Floella Benjamin's highly acclaimed book which was first published in 1994. It tells the story of her journey as a ten year old from her home in Trinidad to London in the 1960's.

Floella's story is typical of many young West Indians of that time, when many of them encouraged by enticing adverts, left their homes in the Caribbean and migrated to Britain. They came in the belief that England was a promised land of golden opportunities. But instead of happiness they found a cold and hostile welcome when they arrived in England.

The film, told from the child perspective, captures in pictures and words, some of the feelings and sensations experienced by Floella and her fellow travellers as they arrive in this strange and unfamiliar place. It depicts what England, particularly London, was like in the early 60's.

Blood Ah Go Run (Blood Will Flow/Be Shed) documents events that took place in London in 1981 including the New Cross fire, the subsequent Black People’s Day of Action, and the Brixton riot.

The film records how the Metropolitan Police attacked and attempted to subvert the peaceful march on the Black People’s Day of Action, the first time Black people in the UK had demonstrated publicly in such numbers. The Brixton riot followed two months later, sparked by the “Sus” laws and the police’s “Operation Swamp” in Brixton.

Honor Flight is a touching documentary about four living World War II veterans and a Midwest community coming together to give them the trip of a lifetime. Volunteers race against the clock to fly thousands of WWII veterans to Washington, DC to see the memorial constructed for them in 2004, nearly 60 years after their epic struggle.

The trips are called “Honor Flights” and for the veterans, who are in their late 80s and early 90s, it’s often the first time they’ve been thanked and the last trip of their lives. The 24-hour journey is full of surprises that deeply move all who are involved. It’s uncommon for World War II veterans to talk about the War, but the Honor Flight experience brings their stories out. Many veterans say, with the exception of their wedding day and the birth of their children, the trip is the best day of their life.

However, success is all but ensured. 1,000 World War II veterans die every day and getting them on an Honor Flight in time is a constant battle. The film features Orville Lemke, a former plumber and beloved father of nine who fights to hold off terminal cancer so he can make the trip, and Julian Plaster, an 89-year-old poet who has survived almost all of his friends and family.

Honor Flight also chronicles the stories of veterans Joe Demler and Harvey Kurz. They raise money for and promote the Honor Flight program to help fly as many of their fellow veterans as possible. Joe, a soft-spoken retired postmaster, was famously pictured in Life magazine as “the Human Skeleton” upon his liberation from a German POW camp. Days from death, he weighed just 70 lbs. His comedic sidekick, Harvey, saw the iconic flag go up at the Battle of Iwo Jima, unbeknownst to the shoppers he bags groceries for at the local Pick n’ Save.

As the Honor Flight trip unfolds, Orville, Julian, Joe, Harvey and others share their stories and wisdom. While the Honor Flight program is meant to give something back to these humble heroes, the sheer goodness they embody and their profound appreciation for life in freedom, transforms the lives of everyone they meet.

In 1961, two years after the revolution, Cuba recruited 100,000 youth to go to the countryside to teach peasants how to read and write. Within one year, these teachers, the majority of them young women and teenage girls, taught 707,000 Cubans to read and write, eradicating illiteracy, according to UNESCO standards, in one of the most successful literacy campaigns ever in the world. Cuba’s model of achieving Literacy is currently being adopted in over 50 nations.

Maestra celebrates this amazing story on the 50th anniversary of the literacy campaign through original film footage of the period, photographs and personal interviews of the teachers who are now in their 60's, 70's and 80's. As they tell their stories, the Cuban women reflect on the transformation of their own lives and the whole of Cuban society as a result of the literacy campaign. For most, it was the first time these women experienced independence and realized their power.

Catherine Murphy is a San Francisco-based filmmaker who has spent much of the last 10 years working in Latin America. She is founder & director of The Literacy Project, a multi-media documentary project on adult literacy in the Americas.

As an independent producer, Murphy's work has largely focused on social documentaries. She has field produced films like Saul Landau's Will the Real Terrorist Please Stand Up?, Eugene Corr's From Ghost Town to Havana, served on the production crew of Gay Cuba; and subtitled Stealing America by Dorothy Fadiman, Jaime Kibben's The Greening of Cuba, and Out and Refusenicks by Sonja de Vries. She also served an archival researcher for Susanne Rostock's recent biography of Harry Belafonte, Sing Your Song.

Murphy served as senior staff producer at the TeleSur TV Washington bureau in 2006 and has produced content for PBS, TeleSur, Avila TV, Pacifica Radio National, WBAI and KPFA. While in Caracas in 2009, she founded Tres Musas Producciones, a collaborative production house of independent women producers working in film, music and literature.

MAESTRA is her directing debut.

Joseph Boulogne, Le Chevalier de St George, was a Black classical composer and violin virtuoso born in Guadeloupe in the mid 18th century. The son of a slave and her master, he achieved enormous success as a musician, fencer, and military man. Yet, when he died in 1799, he was all but erased from history. The Black Mozart in Cuba is the latest act in the rehabilitation of the memory of this extraordinary human being. The film skillfully combines biographical information with performances of his works. The event, held in Cuba in 2005 in his honor, is truly engaging and important and inspired a remarkable film.

Camille is an award winning multi-media producer and animator who returned to Trinidad & Tobago after spending five years honing her animation and multi-media production skills in the United Kingdom. She graduated from Goldsmiths University of London with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Media and Communications specialising in animation. Her Final Year animation ‘The MasterPEACE’, won the Royal Television Society Award in London.

Camille has recently invested substantial creative ingenuity into the development of the animation industry in Trinidad and Tobago. She is the Founder and Creative Director of Animae Caribe Animation and New Media Festival, the Caribbean's first animation and new media festival. She is currently at the University of Trinidad and Tobago as Program Administrator and lecturer for the Animation Studies Diploma. Camille launched in 2003 Full Circle Animation Studio. This facility employs over ten full time staff members, whom she trained in the area of animation. This studio currently creates animation content and digital solutions for several agencies and corporate companies. She was honored with the Toronto based Caribbean Tales Innovation Award for the work that she has achieved in the Caribbean in the field of Animation. Her most recent production is in development, a 26 part animation children series created in the Caribbean using the skills, music and talent of the people of the Caribbean.

In 2012, Camille was selected by the regional institution, Caribbean Examination Council to co-create a brand new syllabus for the Caribbean region, in Digital Media Studies for CAPE and sixth form secondary education. Camille also was selected to be on the CARIFESTA 2013 Interim Festival Directorate under the support of CARICOM. Her mission on the team is to work with the Surinamese Film committee for the CARIFESTA Film Festival to showcase Caribbean Film and animation in Paramaribo Suriname CARIFESTA Edition August 2013

In rural Ghana, Daniel Sekyere, a 15-year-old boy, works in illegal gold mining to support himself. In the gold extraction area where Daniel works, many children are employed in dangerous, physically demanding work as they extract gold from large stones.

While Daniel dreams of becoming a pastor, the demanding gold mining work takes up the majority of his time and he struggles to complete primary school. He is one of over 2,000 Ghanaian children in a similar situation. Physically in pain and yearning to continue his education and become a pastor, Daniel seeks support from Michael Obuodum, a former miner and compassionate radio host in the community. Guided by Michael and a local NGO, “The Social Support Foundation,” Daniel must choose the between the immediate struggle for food and the pursuit of his dreams.

THERE IS NO PLACE FOR YOU HERE is the story of Daniel’s struggle, told through bold, cinematic scenes, from deep underground to the hope of a Ghanaian church service. Ultimately, the film is a statement about the importance of seeking help, even in the worst of situations.

"Bama and Fred" was produced by Courtney Jackson, written by Sandra Bowes and directed by Brian Gerber. All three were students in Regent University's Cinema and Television Department at the time of the production. The film was Executive Produced by filmmaker and author Booker T. Mattison for his Advanced Production class at Regent. "Bama and Fred" was the Regent Cinema and Television department's endowed film for the spring of 2011. In addition to winning a CINE Golden Eagle award in 2012, the film has garnered critical acclaim in festivals around the country.

Breaking Night is a 7 minute hybrid music video/short film, shot on a “red epic” in New Orleans/Baton Rouge, LA.

In 1970’s rural Louisiana, a young girl flees her small town, shedding her ‘fast girl’ image, emerging as a young woman with purpose as night gives way to morning. A young girl, going nowhere fast, flees her small town with her boyfriend. By circumstance…in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere, she meets a couple like none she’s ever seen before. That chance meeting changes her outlook. As night gives way to morning, she abandons the young ‘fast girl’ she was, emerging as a young woman with purpose, into the light.

In an amazingly short eight months span, under the harshest weather conditions, 3,600 Black army troops persevered to accomplish an incredible feat of engineering building the WWII critical defense route known as “The Alcan Highway”. These unheralded men cleared 1,621 miles, of rugged, unmapped wilderness stretching from British Columbia to Fairbanks, Alaska.

Based on the critically acclaimed book by Clifton L. Taulbert, ONCE UPON A TIME... WHEN WE WERE COLORED chronicles the author's coming-of-age in the segregated South in a time when the Ku Klux Klan terrorized the streets and "White's Only" were among the first words learned by African American children. Clifton was encouraged by the love and kinship of the tightly knit community to overcome the bigotry and intolerance of the South, allowing him to embark on an extraordinary journey.
